“Silhouette” is the Weekly Photo Challenge issued by WordPress this week, with the following explanation:
The proper definition of a silhouette is “the outline of a body viewed as circumscribing a mass.” In photography, often we achieve that effect by putting light behind the object whose silhouette we want to capture, effectively darkening out the features of the subject instead of highlighting them.
Sara Rosso used a photo of Rome’s Colosseum to illustrate the concept for us, which prompted the choice of venue for my “Silhouette” response, as well (after muttering to myself that if I had simply waited to publish my last post, I could have killed two birds with one stone — but, of course, what would be the fun in that?!).
The challenge provided an always-welcome chance to revisit our trip to Rome when we walked back to our hotel near the Forum and Colosseum, and saw the outline of the dramatic Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II. Some love it, some hate it, but it cuts an eye-catching silhouette against the evening sky!
Being reminded of Rome is never a bad thing!
