As I mulled over this week’s Photo Challenge theme, I considered possibilities surrounding birthdays, holiday celebrations, and arguably astonishing sights while traveling. I then remembered little Surprise Lake along Highway 38, a National Scenic Byway in Northern Minnesota, and decided it fit the bill nicely!
The fall season when I took this photo was a particularly colorful one, and I was surprised by the vibrant loveliness that met my eyes when we stopped along the highway and walked to the edge of the lake from the wayside. Leaves and color are long gone now, as the lake has settled into its frozen wintry state, but the celebration of the Winter Solstice today reminds us that longer, warmer, and more colorful days will return once again in the months ahead.
