Weekly Photo Challenge: Beyond

Hey, come closer!  No, closer!  That’s it, right up to the door.  No, even closer.  Yes, bend down and put your eye right up to the keyhole, as if you were looking through a telescope.  Can you see what is beyond these imposing doors now?

Doors to the headquarters of the Knights of Malta ~ Aventine Hill, Rome

Amazing, isn’t it?!  This is the view one sees when looking beyond the large wooden doors and through the keyhole on the Piazza dei Cavalieri di Malta in Rome.  Needless to say, this shot took a few tries to focus properly with my Canon PowerShot SX130IS (just a point-and-shoot), holding the camera carefully and as still as possible up to the keyhole.  This famous view, often referred to as a “secret” view or the “hole of Rome,” is located at the gates to the headquarters of the Knights of Malta.

When in Rome, take that short detour while on Aventine Hill and draw close to the keyhole to enjoy the “secret” framed view of the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica far beyond the garden archway.

    • I was so glad to have come across it while researching our trip — seemed somewhat surreal as you put your eye up to the keyhole and viewed St. Peter’s so perfectly framed! ~ Kat
