Weekly Photo Challenge: Up

Looking up at the birch trees as twilight settles in at the cabin on a clear, fall night . . . As I stare at the treetops, I cannot help but think that the trees will come to life – imagine a scene from “Lord of the Rings” as the ents emerge from the still tree forms.  Some seem majestic, some seem old and broken, others appear to be coming into their own as they reach to the sky.

“I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast;
A tree that looks at God all day
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
A tree that may in Summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;
Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.”

~ Joyce Kilmer, “Trees,” 1914

Have you taken the time to look up at the trees on a clear night as the stars come out to play?

  1. This has been a wonderful challenge. There have been so many creative, thoughtful responses. Yours, on Earth Day, is certainly one of them. It’s a beautiful photo, too.

  2. I observe the trees in our woodland daily. I also have an appreciation and respect for them on windy days or in inclement weather. They are simply… amazing!
