Weekly Photo Challenge: Culture

The sidewalk café culture – one of the first five photos I took after stepping off the plane in Paris.

Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary includes as one of its definitions for “culture”:

the customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group; also : the characteristic features of everyday existence (as diversions or a way of life} shared by people in a place or time <popular culture><southern culture>

The outdoor cafés and bars of Paris are a delightful expression of everyday existence, and this snapshot captured the casual, everyday nature of that culture – from the little dog looking expectantly at the scarf-adorned older woman walking by, to the gentleman at the table with a beer on a weekday afternoon.  Scenes like this always drew me in more than the crowded cafés filled with tourists along the popular routes.

Aaron Joel Santos created this week’s photo challenge theme and challenged us to inspire curiosity with our photographic response.  Don’t these scenes just invite you to pull up a chair and enjoy a beverage, while soaking up the ambience of the activity and people around you?!  It is something I did not have enough time to do during our whirlwind trip of the city, but you can be assured that finding time to appreciate this timeless culture is something I will delight in whenever we are fortunate enough to return.

  8. Yes, Kat, this does aptly summarize a bit of culture…and a bit that many of us would love to be enjoying Right Now!! I remember being 18 years old and drinking warm Coke at one of those sidewalk cafes…ahhh…memories….

  11. Wonderful photo story! Path less traveled. Want to go there and see what they are seeing. One of my most favorite travel activity is to explore and shop local grocery stores for local flavor and culture.

  12. That’s exactly what I did in Paris, just sit in a café and watched people go by and drank tons of coffee. Great Cultural Post.

    • It is my one regret from our (only) 3-night stop in Paris on the way to Rome, that we did not have enough time to do that during the day as we traveled with our two teens — we did make time to soak up the culture with extended evening dinners in Rome, and those were some of our favorite memories.

  14. Such a cultural icon. I’m happy that more and more places in the States are putting up tables outside, at least when and where weather and location permit. When the weather’s good, it’s wonderful to be able to sit outside, people-watch and, for me, to enjoy a cup of tea.

    • There are some great spots in Duluth, MN where during our limited summer season you can sit outside and enjoy people-watching as well as the lovely view of Lake Superior! It is a great trend to see.

  16. I like how in Paris the chairs are arranged so that you can people watch while eating/drinking. It was actually a fun thing to do when I was there.
