While climbing Giotto’s Bell Tower (Campanile di Giotto) in Florence, Italy, I could appreciate the patterns covering the Duomo as I peeked through the windows of the winding stone stairwell.
Climbing the 414 steps of the Tower provides such an incredible overview of Florence’s many patterns — from the red-tiled rooftops to the colorful marble exterior of the Duomo. I could not share just one photo with so many rich patterns to choose from!

With only a whirlwind day trip for our Florence experience while staying near Siena for the week, I know we did not do the City justice.

I was so glad we climbed the Tower rather than the Dome itself — seeing the Duomo’s red-tiled dome from the Tower was a wonderful view.

I was thankful we climbed first thing on a summer morning, before temps rose and crowds filled the stairwell!

I haven’t been to Florence since the mid-70’s, so thanks for the beautiful trip back there. I love the way you framed that first shot. I like to try to do the same thing whenever possible. Lovely!

Oh–Firenze–be still my patterned heart. These are lovely, Kat. My daughter and I were there about 2007. This brings back memories. By the way, our son and daughter-in-law are going to Europe for their honeymoon next week. They will be in Italy, but not Florence…

I admit my first thought whenever anyone mentions Florence is the gypsy who was aggressively begging with hand outstretched toward me as my gelato rolled off its cone and onto my arm and purse (as I successfully retrieved it — never waste good gelato) — and as I assertively said “no” she called me a witch-with-a-B (in English!). 🙂 The boys still laugh as they recall that scene.

I think I need to get back there for more than a day trip — I need to explore the city when the large tour groups are not clogging the narrow streets and sidewalks!
