Even during a spring storm . . .
Lake Superior during a storm is often more of a spectator event than something to fear (if observed responsibly, of course!). It is horrific to imagine those waves climbing to a height of 15-20 feet or more and wiping out our neighborhood, let alone our City. But, that is exactly what happened to Tacloban City in the Philippines, as illustrated in stark “before” and “after” photos from the Australian ABC news affiliate, here.
Financial donations are what relief agencies need most right now — material good donations are too expensive to sort and transport, unless you live in the Philippines and are able to make such a donation to a local agency. Many grassroots or fly-by-night organizations crop up after disasters. Do your research carefully to verify the credibility, effectiveness and responsiveness of the charities to which you donate.
One of the resources that helps you to evaluate how responsible your charity is with your donations is Charity Navigator. In fact, Charity Navigator has provided a Philippines disaster relief information page, listing many of the charitable organizations providing support or on-the-ground relief work in the Philippines following this devastating event. This New York Times blog also provides a helpful description of what some of the organizations are doing for their part in the disaster relief efforts.
I encourage you to find at least one charitable organization helping with the Philippines disaster relief efforts that is consistent with your philosophy or charitable giving goals, and give generously.

Great post, Kat. Thank you for highlighting this story! My extended family by marriage lives in the Philippines and from what I understand, the extent of this disaster is unfathomable. Thank you also for encouraging people to check out the charities they are giving to & ensuring that their dollars are going to the proper places.

Thank you so much for taking the time to put this post out. It is so sad to see all of the hurt from a natural disaster. Just think if we stopped the wars and saved all our money for times such as these, how much better we could help.
