The temperatures had already started their downward trend, -8°F with a –28°F wind chill when this photo was taken mid-afternoon from Duluth’s Brighton Beach, as the sea smoke rose from Lake Superior. The beginning of the far-reaching cold snap had arrived.
Minnesotans may be hardy stock, but this impending deep freeze has even prompted the Governor to close all public schools in the State tomorrow. A wind chill warning is in effect through noon on Tuesday, with potential wind chills of -50°F.

We woke up to -22 this morning. I’m so grateful there is no school and my husband can work from home. Hopefully, businesses and organizations will use common sense today (and possibly tomorrow). It’s a perfect day to bake bread and hunker down. Stay warm and safe, Kat!

Up over the hill and inland is still much colder — guess I should also be grateful for “warmer by the Lake” today … although once you’re this cold, not sure you even notice the difference between -20 and -27! Cheers!

Nature always shows us her beauty if we are willing to look and here is to you for doing so! Me, think I will wait for it to warm to -16 before I attempt the car ride to work (-23 at the moment!)

The sea smoke sometimes seems to have a life of its own. When a ship is sitting out on the Lake waiting to load or unload, it can appear to be floating in the mist.

The lake was partially iced over, and then the wind blew it out again, so back to sea smoke as that bitterly cold air hits the “warm” water. Currently outside our door at 10 PM, the thermometer says -17, without the wind chill!
