I try to avoid politics and divisive topics on this blog, but because I view this subject as one of human rights rather than politics, I am sending out this message of hope and support as Minnesota’s House of Representatives debates and votes today on extending the freedom to marry to same-sex couples. Hoping that Minnesota continues its tradition of inclusion and equality.

If this didn’t pass in MN, it probably wouldn’t pass anywhere 🙂 I also wish people would leave life-style choices up to the individual and reserve regulations and laws for things that impact the general public.

Remember, Michelle Bachmann was a MN legislator — MN has pockets of folks who want big government to go away except when it comes to legislating what they view to be “morality” and “values.” Thankfully, the State passed the freedom to marry act, and let people make their own choices about how to live their lives. I’m not a fan of big government, but unlike many who want big government to go away, I think government also has absolutely no place legislating values. Makes no sense to me.

I’m like you, stay away from politics…but the same-sex marriage issue is not politics, it’s equal rights for all in a land built around freedom and equality:) So happy with the outcome!

I grew up in Minnesota and much of my value system comes by way of the greater Minnesota family. They taught me that if you live through a winter you where now family, you were family no matter your differences. They taught me that you listened to all with respect and that meant everyone. I can’t tell you the depth of my sadness when I learned it was the desire of the government in Minnesota to amend the constitution so that there would be two classes of people; those that were all equal, and those that were not quite so equal. It was as though the place I remember in my mind, it doesn’t exist, and if it doesn’t exist now, did it ever exist.

Sometimes I ask myself that, but as a whole I think a lot of time media distorts things for the sake of selling the “news” — the constitutional amendments did not pass, the people said their piece with their votes. The freedom to marry bill has now passed the House and goes on to the Senate on Monday. Minnesota is still full of many good folks, just like everywhere — can’t let ugly voices drown them out.
